The item we use during our classes to project the screen of the iPad onto the Big Screen is called a Digital A/V Adapter. This device will "mirror" exactly what you see on the iPad. With the adapter you can connect to a projector or your wide screen TV.
Your TV needs to have one available HDMI port and you'll have to buy an HDMI cable of the proper length. The adapter will also allow you to hook up your charging cable if the battery is low on your iPad.

The adapter we use in class is part number MD098ZM/A and works with iPad2 or iPad3. The iPad4 uses a different connector (called lightning) and requires a different adapter. That part number is MD826ZM/A. Both devices support mirroring!

Apple sells these adapters for $39 and $49. You can view more info on the first one HERE and the second one HERE. You should also be able to find them at Amazon, Best Buy, Staples and Walmart, to name a few. The HDMI cables vary widely in price. At our local stores they are very expensive. I shopped on Amazon and got one for less than half the local price.
Besides class, I also use the adapter to stream TV shows, play movies, look at photos and display any other content I wish from my iPad onto my 60 inch HDTV. You can too!
