New TV App

Last month Apple® introduced the new TV app, offering a unified experience for discovering and accessing TV shows and movies from multiple apps on Apple TV®, iPhone® and iPad®. The TV app provides one place to access TV shows and movies, as well as a place to discover new content to watch. Apple also introduced a new Siri® feature for Apple TV that lets viewers tune in directly to live news and sporting events across their apps. Watching TV shows and movies across Apple devices has never been easier.

“Using apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad has become the primary way for so many of us to watch television,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “The TV app shows you what to watch next and easily discover TV shows and movies from many apps in a single place.”

Key Features Within the TV App Include:
  • Watch Now: Watch Now is where viewers will see their collection of available shows and movies from iTunes® and apps. From Watch Now, viewers can then go to Up Next or Recommended to choose what to watch.
  • Up Next: Users can enjoy the shows and movies they are currently watching, including recent iTunes rentals and purchases — all presented in the order they are most likely to watch first. For example, when viewers finish an episode, the next one will automatically appear at the start of the Up Next queue, as will any new episodes as they become available. At any time, users can simply ask Siri to continue watching a show and immediately pick up where they left off.
  • Recommended: Viewers can explore a great selection of curated and trending shows and movies, including collections handpicked by Apple’s curators, and dedicated categories and genres such as kids, sci-fi and comedy.
  • Library: Viewers can access their entire collection of iTunes movies and TV shows that they have rented or purchased on iTunes.
  • Store: If users are looking for something new, they can check out the Store to discover great new content across video services that they have not yet downloaded or are not yet subscribed to, along with the latest releases on iTunes.

The TV app will be available for Apple TV, iPhone and iPad and always stays in sync so that when users begin watching on one device they can easily continue where they left off on their Apple devices.

Live Tune-In With Siri
Siri continues to gain powerful new capabilities, including making it really easy to tune right to live news and sporting events on Apple TV. Siri is now aware of live sporting events across apps so users can simply say things like, “Watch the Stanford game” or “Which games are on right now?” Siri knows additional details of the games, can provide live scores and can take viewers directly to the live stream within the app that’s carrying it. Viewers can also tune directly to live video by just saying the name of the app, for example “Watch CBS News” without having to navigate to the live stream from within the app.

Single Sign-On for Pay-TV Apps
In addition to the new TV app, customers in the US will have a simplified way of enjoying their pay-TV video apps by using single sign-on. Starting in December, subscribers to DIRECTV, DISH Network and more will just sign in once on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad to enjoy immediate access to apps that are part of their pay-TV subscription.

Since its introduction just a year ago, the latest Apple TV has revolutionized the experience in the living room with 8,000 apps, including 2,000 games and 1,600 video apps, across categories such as sports, news, fitness, education, kids, lifestyle and more.

Availability
The TV app and single sign-on will be available in December as free software updates for Apple TV (4th generation), iPhone and iPad customers in the US. Live tune-in with Siri is available now. For more information, please visit: apple.com/tv. Features are subject to change and only apply to participating apps. Some features may not be available in all regions or all languages.

"Designed By Apple In California" Released

Apple® today announced the release of a new hardbound book chronicling 20 years of Apple’s design, expressed through 450 photographs of past and current Apple products. "Designed by Apple in California," which covers products from 1998’s iMac® to 2015’s Apple Pencil®, also documents the materials and techniques used by Apple’s design team over two decades of innovation.

The book is dedicated to the memory of Steve Jobs.

“The idea of genuinely trying to make something great for humanity was Steve’s motivation from the beginning, and it remains both our ideal and our goal as Apple looks to the future,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. “This archive is intended to be a gentle gathering of many of the products the team has designed over the years. We hope it brings some understanding to how and why they exist, while serving as a resource for students of all design disciplines.”

The products in this book are the result of a profoundly close collaboration between many different groups. Shot by photographer Andrew Zuckerman in a deliberately spare style, the book’s 450 images illustrate Apple’s design process as well as its finished products.

In the book’s foreword, Ive explains:
While this is a design book, it is not about the design team, the creative process, or product development. It is an objective representation of our work that, ironically, describes who we are. It describes how we work, our values, our preoccupations, and our goals. We have always hoped to be defined by what we do rather than by what we say.

We strive, with varying degrees of success, to define objects that appear effortless. Objects that appear so simple, coherent, and inevitable that there could be no rational alternative.
"Designed by Apple in California" is available in two sizes and printed on specially milled, custom-dyed paper with gilded matte silver edges, using eight color separations and low-ghost ink. This linen-bound, hardcover volume was developed over an eight-year period. It is published by Apple.

Pricing & Availability
"Designed by Apple in California" will be available beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, November 16, in small (10.20” x 12.75”) at $199 (US) and large (13” x 16.25”) at $299 (US) exclusively from Apple.com in Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the UK and the US, and [very few] select Apple Stores.

AirPods, Wireless Headphones, Next Month

On 9-7-16 Apple® introduced AirPods™, innovative new wireless headphones that use advanced technology to reinvent how we listen to music, make phone calls, enjoy TV shows and movies, play games and interact with Siri®, providing a wireless audio experience not possible before. AirPods eliminate the hassles of wireless headphones, by just flipping open the lid of its innovative charging case and with one tap, they are instantly set up and ready to work with your iPhone® and Apple Watch®.

Advanced sensors know when you are listening and automatically play and pause your music. Using Siri, AirPods allow you to access your favorite personal assistant with just a double tap. This revolutionary experience is enabled by the new ultra-low power Apple W1 chip, which enables AirPods to deliver high-quality audio and industry-leading battery life in a completely wireless design. AirPods will be available starting in late October.

“AirPods are the first headphones to deliver a breakthrough wireless audio experience, and with the new Apple W1 chip they deliver innovative features including high quality sound, great battery life and automatic setup,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “AirPods are simple and magical to use, with no switches or buttons, automatically connecting to all your Apple devices simply and seamlessly, and letting you access Siri with just a double tap. The all new Apple W1 chip enables the groundbreaking innovations in AirPods, with dual optical sensors and accelerometers in each AirPod that work with the W1 chip to detect when AirPods are in your ear, so they only play when you are ready to listen. Simply remove them to automatically pause the music, or just remove one to have a conversation and automatically resume when you put it back.

Access Siri with a double tap to your AirPods to select and control your music, change the volume, check your battery life or perform any other Siri task. An additional accelerometer in each AirPod detects when you’re speaking, enabling a pair of beam-forming microphones to focus on the sound of your voice, filtering out external noise to make your voice sound clearer than ever before.

The ultra-low power Apple W1 chip operates at one-third of the power of traditional wireless chips, enabling AirPods to deliver up to 5 hours of listening time on one charge. The custom-designed charging case holds additional charges, for an industry-leading more than 24 hours of total listening time, ensuring AirPods are charged and ready to go whenever you are.

iOS 10 Update, Major Problems For Some

Apple's just-launched iOS 10 update got off to a rough start Tuesday afternoon. According to widespread complaints across social media, many iPhone and iPad users ran into installation problems. For some, the update process failed with a subsequent error message asking users to plug their iOS device into a PC or Mac for a complete restore of the operating system. Here's Apple's support page with a step-by-step explanation of how to do that.

In a statement to The Verge, an Apple spokesperson said "We experienced a brief issue with the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers". The company says users should now be able to safely proceed with installing iOS 10. But the initial bug proved a major headache for people who installed Apple's big update in the middle of their workday or far away from their personal computer.

This sort of thing has happened before; just a few months ago, the initial iOS 9.3.2 rollout "bricked" the company's 9.7-inch iPad Pro, which led Apple to temporarily pull back the update. But it's worse when these problems tarnish the launch of a brand new, major release that's actually quite good — if users can manage to successfully install it. Apple's statement suggests that whatever issue caused this brief mess has been resolved, but be sure to backup your iOS device before starting today's update.

Maximize Battery Life

Battery life of a device can be critical for many individuals. Many consumers want to maximize the battery life and lifespan of these gadgets so they are able to do more with them.

Recently Tech Times reported on Apple's Vice President of software engineering, Craig Federighi, confirming that force quitting apps does not aid in preserving the battery life of iPhones.

When an iPhone user asked Apple boss Tim Cook in an email if quitting the "iOS multitasking apps frequently" is beneficial to prevent a dead battery, Federighi replied with a concise "no and no" response.

Apple itself has devoted a page (HERE) laying out a few tips to improve the battery life and battery lifespan of iPhone, iPad and other iDevices.

In its post, Apple defines battery life as the amount of time the device runs before the user needs to recharge it. Battery lifespan, in the meantime, pertains to the amount of time the battery lasts until it needs a replacement.

"Maximize both and you'll get the most out of your Apple devices, no matter which ones you own," it says.

Here are a few tips from Apple that may significantly enhance your iDevice's battery life. These tips are not as tough as you think.

Update Your iDevice To The Latest Software
Whether you own an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, iPod Touch, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, updating your device to the latest version of OS X, iOS or watchOS will do the trick. The software updates are packed with advanced energy-saving technologies, so always ensure that your device runs the most recent version.

If you own an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, for instance, you can update your device into the latest software by heading to Settings > General > Software Update.

Avoid Exposing Your iDevice To High Temperatures
Refrain from exposing your device to temperatures higher than 95 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid damaging its battery capacity. Charging the device and storing it at high temperatures can damage it even more.

Remove The Device’s Case When Charging
Make sure to remove the style case of your device when you are charging it as it may generate excess heat. The heat can have an effect on its battery capacity. When you notice that your device gets hot, you have to take it out from its case.

Charge It Around 50 Percent When Storing The Device
If you would like to store your device for a long time, you must have it half-charged. If you store the device fully charged long term, it leads to your device having a shorter battery life. In contrast, whenever you store it fully discharged, the battery could result in a deep discharge state. On top of that, you should also keep it in a moisture-free, cool environment that’s lower than 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

If, however, you intend to use the device after storing it for some time, you may need to charge it for 20 minutes with the original adapter prior to using it.

Optimize Your iDevice’s Settings
The following techniques are surefire ways in optimizing the device’s battery life:

1. Adjust the brightness of your screen. You have to enable the auto-brightness of your device or dim its screen.

2. Make use of Wi-Fi rather than a cellular network when accessing data on your iPhone or iPad, since a Wi-Fi connection consumes less power then a cellular connection.

For your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air you have to turn off your Wi-Fi when you are not using it, as it eats up power. It may also help if you quit apps and disconnect peripherals that are not in use. Ejecting an SD card on your laptop can likewise help save your laptop's battery life.

Activate Your Device’s Low Power Mode
The Low Power Mode is a handy feature introduced with iOS 9. When your iPhone, for instance, goes down to 20 percent and 10 percent, it will allow you to enable this feature with only one tap. You can also manually configure it by heading over to Settings > Battery.

Activating the Low Power Mode of the device will significantly lessen its brightness, reduces the system animations and optimizes its performance. This will instantly be switched off when you recharge your phone.

Check Out Your Battery Usage
You are able to analyze your battery usage by going to Settings > Battery.

Moreover, you can further optimize your device’s battery life by carrying out these strategies:

1. Disable the feature allowing apps to refresh in the background by heading to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

2. Turn off a particular app’s Location Services by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

3. Disable your push notifications on a particular app by going to Settings > Notifications. Hit the app and switch it off.

4. Switching on the Airplane mode can also help big in maximizing the battery life of your device when you are in an area with low or no cell coverage.

Don’t Charge The Device To A Computer That’s Turned Off
If you want to charge your iDevice to a computer via a USB, you need to make certain that the laptop or desktop isn’t turned off or set in a standby or sleep mode. This way, you can prevent the device’s battery from draining.

There you have it, quick and easy tips to boost the battery life and battery lifespan of your iOS device.

How To Speed Up An iPad

If you own an older model of iPad - perhaps an iPad 1, 2 or 3, or the iPad mini 1 - then the chances are that it isn't running as quickly as you'd like. Even though iOS is a modern operating system that requires minimal maintenance, it still gets full and slows down over time.

Sometimes even relatively new models feel sluggish compared to the way they soared when brand-new.

There are many different techniques for speeding up an old or slowed-down iPad, and here are some of the ones that have been found to be most effective.

     1. The first trick is to have a good software clear-out. Remove any apps that you no longer use. Apps take up storage space, and freeing up space makes it easier for iOS to operate.

Note that we're talking about deleting the apps from the device entirely, not just closing them down (by double-tapping to open the multitasking bar, then swiping up on the app you want to close). That won't make any difference. The theory that closing down a few apps will free up memory and speed up an iOS device is a myth, and anybody who understands how iOS manages memory knows that it won't work.

But deleting apps that you no longer use has a notable effect on iOS. That one isn't a myth.

     2. After you've got rid of the apps you don't need, it's time to slim down the apps you do want to keep, by getting rid of files inside them.

Click Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage. Now tap Manage Storage (under Storage, not iCloud) and look for items that are taking up lots of space. Podcasts, GarageBand and Movies are likely suspects. Tap an app to view its contents, and then swipe left across any item you don't want and tap Delete.

     3. Once you've cleared out the iPad, you should restart it. The restart refreshes the memory and enables it to start from scratch.

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button until you see the Slide To Power Off control slide and power down your iPad, then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again to wake it back up.

Apple Previews iOS 10

Yesterday Apple® previewed iOS 10, the biggest release ever of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, featuring a huge update to Messages that delivers more expressive and animated ways to message friends and family, like stickers and full-screen effects. iOS 10 introduces the ability for Siri® to do more by working with apps, beautifully redesigned Maps, Photos, Apple Music® and News apps, and the Home app, delivering a simple and secure way to manage home automation products in one place. iOS 10 opens up incredible opportunities to developers with Siri, Maps, Phone and Messages.

“iOS 10 is our biggest release ever, with delightful new ways to express yourself in Messages, a native app for Home automation, and beautifully redesigned apps for Music, Maps, and News that are more intuitive and more powerful, making everything you love about your iPhone and iPad even better,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “iOS 10 adds Siri intelligence into QuickType and Photos, automates your home with the new Home app and opens up Siri, Maps, Phone and Messages to developers — while increasing security and privacy with powerful technologies like Differential Privacy.”

Personal & Expressive Messages
Messages is the most frequently used iOS app, and with iOS 10 it is more expressive and fun with animated and personalized ways to message friends and family. Messages includes powerful animations, such as balloons, confetti or fireworks that can take over an entire screen to celebrate a special occasion, invisible ink to send a message only revealed after a friend swipes over it, and for added personalization, handwritten notes. Automatic suggestions make it easy to replace words with emoji, Tapback creates a quick and simple way to respond with just a tap and rich links let you see content inline and play media without ever leaving your conversation.

Beautifully Redesigned Maps
Maps in iOS 10 gets a beautiful redesign that makes it even simpler and more intuitive to use. Now open to developers with new extensions, apps like OpenTable can integrate bookings right into Maps, and services like Uber and Lyft can make it easier for users to book a ride, without ever leaving the Maps app. Maps is even smarter with new intelligence that proactively delivers directions to where you most likely want to go next, based on your routine or appointments on your calendar. Once a route is planned, Maps can search along the route for gas stations, restaurants, coffee shops and more and provides an estimate of how the stop impacts the length of your trip.

Apple Pulls iOS 9.3.2 Update For 9.7-Inch iPad Pro

Apple has just released its iOS 9.3.2 update, but some owners of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro tablet who installed the latest OS were in for an unpleasant surprise.

Despite going through the usual beta testing and releases, the latest iOS turned a number of slates into bricks. After updating, users who encountered the bug saw a "Connect to iTunes" message. Unfortunately for them, the restoration process (via iTunes or DFU) failed to fix the "Error 56," as the bug is named.

9to5Mac reports that Apple is considering replacing the bricked iPad Pros at the Genius Bar, should the devices become a victim of Error 56. "We're looking into a small number of reports that some iPad units are receiving an error when updating the software," Apple notes.

It took a while before the manufacturing company took note of the issue and directed those affected toward contacting Apple support. The matter remained pending, until the OEM decided to curb the number of casualties among 9.7-inch iPad Pro tablets.

To do so, Apple has stopped distributing the iOS 9.3.2 to 9.7-inch iPad Pro slates. It should be noted that the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro tablets face no problems during the update.

This is not the first time that iOS updates have rendered Apple devices useless.

No sooner than a few months ago, the company launched iOS 9.3, which caused a number of older iOS gadgets to crash. Users who owned an iPhone 5s and earlier or an iPad Air and earlier complained of activation problems while attempting to step up to iOS 9.3.

After the incident, the iPhone maker put a pause on the update until a fixed version went live. As a reminder, the iOS 9.3 fix came rather quickly after the reports started to pile up, which allowed the update process to keep going at its normal pace.

Seeing how there is no official statement from the company about a temporary fix for those affected, there is a high chance that Apple will issue a new release for the tablets who suffered after the iOS 9.3.2 bug.

Customizable Email App Spark Arrives On The iPad

Readdle launched Spark last year with the goal of making it easier to deal with your inbox, and yesterday it continued that mission with the launch of a new version that works on the iPad.

Spark is by and large the same app on the iPad as it is on the iPhone: it breaks your inbox up into basic but useful chunks — new emails, newsletters and notifications, pinned items, and everything else — and then gives you a bunch of tools to deal with them as you'd like.

There's a snooze feature, there are integrations with popular services like Dropbox and Evernote, and there are ways to customize the interface and your interactions with it as you'd like.

In a brief test on a first generation iPad mini — which, for comparison, can no longer open Mailbox without crashing — Spark moved fast and was able to load emails quickly. It's portrait view only shows a list of emails, which can be pretty intimidating if your inbox is stuffed, but the app's landscape view offers more information, letting you view an email on one side of the screen and a condensed inbox view on the other.

As with Spark on the iPhone, the iPad version is free to use and certainly worth trying out if you aren't satisfied with the email app you're already using.

Running Windows Programs On A Mac

Macs have a thriving ecosystem of software, but some programs still only support Windows. Whether you want to use business software or play Windows PC games, there are many ways to run Windows programs on your Mac.

Some of these methods are similar to the ways you can install Windows software on Linux or run Windows programs on a Chromebook. Virtual machines, dual-booting, the Wine compatibility layer, and remote desktop are possible solutions.

Because this discussion can take some time and space, I've provided links to three websites that should be very helpful.

Safari Suffers Major Outage: Keeps Crashing

Apple's Safari browser has been struggling to keep up with its demanding public this morning, with a number of users reporting crashes and service outages.

The crash is reported to have been caused by a bug with the browser's 'auto suggest' feature and has seemingly affected iPhone and iPad users worldwide.

A fix has been suggested by many users on Twitter while Apple is said to be working on a more permanent solution.

The auto suggest feature works by attempting to predict what the user is searching for and offering a list of possible suggestions.

Users raised the issue on the Twitter this morning, with many using the hashtag #Safaricrash to report the browser crashing on multiple devices.

Users experiencing issues with Apple's browser have been advised to disable the browser's suggestions.

Go to: Settings > Safari > Safari Suggestions.

Apple has not yet officially revealed what is causing the issue, but a Reddit user claiming to be an Apple employee has said the firm is looking into the issue.

Today's browser problems follow in the wake of a prank site which wreaked havoc on iPhones by crashing the browser.

Earlier this week, MailOnline reported the website www.crashsafari.com crashes the iPhone's default browser by releasing thousands of characters that overload its memory, overheating the phone until it shuts down completely.

It has also been posted with a URL shortener to try to trick people into opening it.

The page includes a header title and a small piece of JavaScript, which calls the HTML5 History API thousands of times in a loop that causes Safari to freeze.

Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results

Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2016 first quarter ended December 26, 2015. The Company posted record quarterly revenue of $75.9 billion and record quarterly net income of $18.4 billion, or $3.28 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $74.6 billion and net income of $18 billion, or $3.06 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 40.1 percent compared to 39.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 66 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

“Our team delivered Apple’s biggest quarter ever, thanks to the world’s most innovative products and all-time record sales of iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple TV,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The growth of our Services business accelerated during the quarter to produce record results, and our installed base recently crossed a major milestone of one billion active devices.”

“Our record sales and strong margins drove all-time records for net income and EPS in spite of a very difficult macroeconomic environment,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “We generated operating cash flow of $27.5 billion during the quarter, and returned over $9 billion to investors through share repurchases and dividends. We have now completed $153 billion of our $200 billion capital return program.”

Apple is providing the following guidance for its fiscal 2016 second quarter:

App Store Sets New Records During Holidays

Apple® today announced that customers around the world made this holiday season the biggest ever for the App Store®, setting new records during the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s.

In the two weeks ending January 3, customers spent over $1.1 billion on apps and in-app purchases, setting back-to-back weekly records for traffic and purchases. January 1, 2016 marked the biggest day in App Store history with customers spending over $144 million. It broke the previous single-day record set just a week earlier on Christmas Day.

“The App Store had a holiday season for the record books. We are excited that our customers downloaded and enjoyed so many incredible apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV, spending over $20 billion on the App Store last year alone,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “We're grateful to all the developers who have created the most innovative and exciting apps in the world for our customers. We can't wait for what's to come in 2016.”

Worldwide, the App Store has brought in nearly $40 billion for developers since 2008, with over one-third generated in the last year alone.

Largely as a result of the App Store’s success, Apple is now responsible for creating and supporting 1.9 million jobs in the U.S. alone. Nearly three-quarters of those jobs — over 1.4 million — are attributable to the community of app creators, software engineers and entrepreneurs building apps for iOS, as well as non-IT jobs supported directly and indirectly through the app economy.
