Apple Reports Record Results
Apple® today (1-23-13) announced financial results for its 13-week fiscal 2013
first quarter ended December 29, 2012. The Company posted record
quarterly revenue of $54.5 billion and record quarterly net profit of
$13.1 billion, or $13.81 per diluted share. These results compare to
revenue of $46.3 billion and net profit of $13.1 billion, or $13.87 per
diluted share, in the 14-week year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 38.6
percent compared to 44.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. International
sales accounted for 61 percent of the quarter’s revenue.
Average weekly revenue was $4.2 billion in the quarter compared to $3.3 billion in the year-ago quarter.
The Company sold a record 47.8 million iPhones in the quarter, compared to
37 million in the year-ago quarter. Apple also sold a record 22.9
million iPads during the quarter, compared to 15.4 million in the
year-ago quarter. The Company sold 4.1 million Macs, compared to 5.2
million in the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 12.7 million iPods in the
quarter, compared to 15.4 million in the year-ago quarter.

Microsoft (barely) Sells A Million Surface Units
If you’re Microsoft, January can’t end too soon. The company’s
Surface RT is taking a battering from the iPad, selling one million of the tablets
during the holidays. According to one Wall Street observer, the
consumer-oriented tablet has two strikes against it: being compared to
Apple’s product and too little retail exposure.
The one million figure is less than half of the two million units
previously forecast by UBS analyst Brent Thill. In December, IHS iSuppli
projected Microsoft would sell just 1.3 million units of the Surface

App Store Tops 40 Billion Downloads
Apple® announced, on Jan 7, that customers have downloaded over 40 billion
apps*, with nearly 20 billion in 2012 alone. The App Store℠ has over 500
million active accounts and had a record-breaking December with over
two billion downloads during the month. Apple’s incredible developer
community has created over 775,000 apps for iPhone®, iPad® and iPod
touch® users worldwide, and developers have been paid over seven billion
dollars by Apple.
“It has been an incredible year for the iOS
developer community,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of
Internet Software and Services. “Developers have made over seven billion
dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them
with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in
the world.”
