Speed Up Your iDevice, Clear The RAM

Have you ever found yourself messing around with your iPhone or iPad, only to have it start to feel a little sluggish? It feels like everything you want to do takes longer than it should. Launching Twitter should happen in an instant, but it doesn’t!

Maybe you need to flush your iDevice’s RAM. I’m not talking about manually quitting all of the apps running. Rather, I’m talking about a lesser-known technique that will get everything out of RAM and let you feel like the device just turned on.

The first thing you need to do is hold the power button until “Slide to Power Off” appears on the screen. Don’t slide it though! Instead, press and hold the Home button for a few seconds, and you will be placed back on the Home screen with a fresh slate as far as your RAM is concerned.

Don’t believe me? Double-tap the Home button. You’ll see that the apps you were running are still there, but if you click one, it will need to relaunch as if you were launching it from its icon.

Also, it should be noted that iOS generally does a good job of managing memory, and you shouldn’t need to do this often. But if something goes wrong, it’s a nice trick to know!

Apple's new SD card adapter brings USB 3.0 speed

The iPad Pro shipped with a Lightning port capable of faster USB 3.0 speeds, and now there's a way to actually make use of that. Apple has announced a new version of its Lightning to SD card adapter — a Camera Reader, in Apple parlance — that offers USB 3.0 transfer speeds when used with the iPad Pro, or USB 2.0 with any other Lightning-equipped iOS device.

The adapter could make the iPad Pro a more attractive device for any photographers looking to transfer large quantities of RAW files. iOS 9.2 also brought the ability for iPhones to use Apple's Lightning to SD card and USB adapters; Apple has sold them ever since the original iPad, but until now they'd never been compatible with the iPhone.

The Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader is available now from Apple for $29.

iOS 9.1 Update Causes Touch ID Problems

Apple's Support Community website has been flooded by posts from disgruntled customers who are complaining about the latest update for iPads and iPhones, which they say only served to break the gadgets' software instead of fixing it.

Released on Oct. 21, the iOS 9.1 update included 11 features that were designed to address bugs in the gadgets' system, such as issues with incorrect unread email counts, activation errors and unresponsive Calendar and Game Center apps.

Instead of fixing the bugs, however, Apple product users wrote on the company's official support forum that the update caused the Touch ID across iPads and iPhones to break.

Many of the complaints focus on the Touch ID's inability to recognize the fingerprint of users. Customers pointed out that the system is no longer reliable as fingerprints pressed against the gadgets do not seem to register anymore.

Apple's decision to discontinue granting permission to install the iOS 9.0.2 update within days of launching iOS 9.1 has also prevented affected users to downgrade back to the older version of the software.

The recent issues with iOS 9.1 have once again raised questions regarding the Apple's strategy of rushing update releases.

While it has become a standard practice to release subsequent updates after launching a new product, observers believe Apple should rethink its strategy to avoid running into similar problems with the last year's iOS 8, which is considered to be the buggiest update the company has ever released.

Tech experts also criticize Apple's discontinuance of providing downgrade routes that would have allowed users to switch back to a more usable version of gadgets software in case they experience issues with newer releases.

For the moment, users affected by the iOS 9.1 issues will have to wait for Apple to launch a new software update to fix the bugs.

3 Search Sites That Don't Track You Like Google

When you need to get information or find something online, chances are you go to Google. But while Google is great at Web searches, it’s hardly stellar when it comes to privacy. It saves your search history, scans your Gmail, tracks your location, keeps everything you say to “OK Google,” and a lot more.

Google does this partly to make its services more useful to you, by knowing what you want before you want it. But it also does it so it can serve you ads targeted just for you. Google also owns the digital ad network DoubleClick, which serves those interest-based ads.

Aside from blatant ad targeting, Google also filters results for you based on your search history. This "filter bubble" means that you and a family member can search for the same term, but come up with different results. To be fair, Google does let you wipe your search history, but it's always going to be trying to put two and two together.

If you're tired of Google and its lax view of privacy, here are three private search sites that don't track you. Check them all to find the one that's best for you.

DuckDuckGo is a solid Google replacement that doesn't track or target your IP address or search history. You don't have to worry about targeted search results or being trapped in a filter bubble, which actually means you get more results.

DuckDuckGo includes the nifty calculators and other tricks you've come to expect on Google, but that's not all. You can customize its interface, with search shortcuts and an Instant Answers feature that's just as good as, if not better than, Google's Knowledge Graph. You can also make DuckDuckGo an extension of your browser and activate more privacy settings to keep your search history as protected as possible.

Yippy automatically detects and blocks adult content, including pornography, gambling sites, sex product sites and other websites that are not appropriate for kids. Plus, the site protects your privacy.

It will not collect personally identifiable information about you, like your name, telephone number, address and email address. It may collect anonymous information about your computer, though, such as your IP address. It also uses cookies, but not to track your personal behavior.

Ixquick calls itself the world's most private search site. It doesn't record your IP address, browser information or search history, so advertisers can't track you. Ixquick also keeps you out of filter bubbles, so you can get the search results you're looking for.

It also gives you the privacy of searching via proxy, so the sites you visit don't even know your real IP address. This is similar to Tor, but without the hassle of setting it up. Ixquick's proxy option gives you the most online privacy. It may slow down your searches, but when you select "proxy," Ixquick makes you invisible online.

Even if you minimize your use of Google, it's not the only company collecting your information and using it in scary ways. Facebook and hundreds of other sites track and share what you do.

Apple’s Revised iPad Strategy, More Like A PC?

Longer-than-expected tablet lifespans have led to a sluggish market for Apple's iPad, but the company seems poised to pivot by pitching the iconic device as more, not less, like a personal computer, an analyst said today.

"At the beginning of the [tablet] market, people bought tablets because they were different from PCs," said Carolina Milanesi, chief of research and head of U.S. business for Kantar WorldPanel Comtech, in a Friday interview. "That was what got early adopters interested."

Because tablets were seen as something other than a personal computer, in other words, they were attractive, especially to those who already owned smartphones -- Apple's own iPhone, in particular. The tablet, the thinking went, was simply a larger smartphone -- it relied on the same operating system, the same app ecosystem, the same touch-only user interface (UI) -- minus the calling.

That worked for a while.

Slow sales

Since then, tablet sales, iPad included, first stalled and then slumped. According to research firm IDC, tablet shipments declined by 7% in the second quarter after falling 4% in the first. Meanwhile, iPad sales have contracted for six straight quarters, falling 23% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2015, 18% in the second.

Most analysts have attributed slowing iPad sales to stretched device lifespans, longer than what they had figured when the category debuted with the original iPad in 2010. Then, many believed that buyers would refresh their tablets every two years or so, a cadence similar to smartphones.

The reality turned out differently, with intervals much more like PCs than phones.

Kantar's data supported that. Of the iPads currently in use in the U.S., more than a quarter -- 28% -- were iPad 2, the March 2011 model; one-six, or about 16%, were iPad 3 (March 2012); 8% iPad 4 (October 2012); 14% iPad Mini (November 2012-2014); 12% iPad Air (November 2013); and 4% iPad Air 2 (October 2014). Close to half -- 44% -- were models 3+ years old.

According to Kantar, 30% of the iPad owners they polled have had their current tablet for 36 months or more. ..........

"Non-tablet owners told us, 'My PC is good enough' and that they're not engaged with their PC but use the phone more. But they also don't think the tablet is as good as a PC," said Milanesi.

More like a PC

If Apple can demonstrate that the iPad is a suitable substitute for a PC, Milanesi thought that the Cupertino, Calif. company could reenergize sales. "If there's something that is as powerful as a PC but at the same time, agile like a tablet, consumers will be interested," she said.

That strategy wouldn't be new: Microsoft has relied on it since 2012 when it introduced its Surface Pro line, and the Redmond, Wash. firm's OEM (original equipment manufacturer) partners have followed suit with the same pitch for their devices. "That's always been the case for Microsoft, since the Surface Pro came from the Windows side," Milanesi said.

Apple has strongly hinted that it will adopt the Microsoft angle: iOS 9, slated to launch this fall, probably next month, includes features specifically for the iPad, like split-screen and a two-apps-side-by-side mode, that have been in Windows for years, and at the same time presage a larger tablet in Apple's inventory.

"If you look at what Apple's doing, it's more and more focusing on the powerful part of the [iPad]," said Milanesi, ticking off the iOS 9 additions and the push into the enterprise through a 2014 partnership with IBM.

Not a hybrid

But while the broad strokes of a revised iPad approach may be similar to that of the Surface Pro, Milanesi expected that Apple will shun the "2-in-1," "convertible" or "hybrid" labels that have dominated Windows-powered devices with attributes of both PC and tablet.

"2-in-1 sounds like you're compromising something," she said.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly belittled 2-in-1s, most notably in 2012 when he compared such devices to a mashup of toaster and refrigerator. Cook has given no clue since then that he's changed his mind. ..........

5 Great iPad Productivity Features In iOS 9

Apple’s iOS 9 is still in beta, but the final release date is closing in. Here are five great features to look forward to if you happen to be an iPad user.

Slide

iOS 9 lets you look at two apps at once using Slide Over. The second app appears beside your current app within a sidebar to the right of your screen. This feature should help you when researching or writing an email while working on something else. You activate Slide Over by placing your finger toward the center right of your display, tap and hold and swipe to the left. Available apps will then appear in the sidebar and you can tap the one you wish to use. To change the second app just tap the original app to end the session and then activate Slide Over again to choose a new app.

Split

Slide Over seems useful, but Split View in iOS 9 is more powerful. It lets you run two apps in one window, though the feature only works with iPad Air 2 models and later. You access it in a very similar fashion to Slide Over:
Launch an app

Now tap on finger in the center right area of the display and swipe left to open Slide Over.

Choose the second app.

When the app opens in the sidebar, tap on the vertical line in the middle of the sidebar and drag this to the left.

The second app will now become active in the main screen.
You can define how much space each app should have available by dragging the line between the two, or swipe that line right back to the right to return to single app view.

PiP

When you’re working in another app and a Facetime video call comes in, you will be able to take that call within a smaller window while remaining in the other app. This applies to other forms of video playback and shows up as an icon (two opposite facing arrows pointing NE and SW) at the lower left of the screen when available, just pinch in or out to make the inline picture larger or smaller. This isn’t just a consumer-focused enhancement -- it promises to be an excellent research tool when taking notes during a Webinar, for example.

Folders

As previously reported, iOS 9 introduces a 4-x-4 icon grid in folders on iPad, translating into the ability to stash up to 105 apps inside each folder.

Keyboard

iOS 9’s QuickType keyboard is far more versatile. Among other features it will now show lowercase letters so you know when Caps Lock is active. The new shortcut bar offers useful tools like cut, copy, and paste and clipboard functions. Brand new camera and attachments controls also feature in the release. Improved touch support means you will be able to move the text cursor quickly around the screen using two fingers. You can also use external keyboard shortcuts

Compatibility

iOS 9 is the most backward compatible OS release yet. For iPad users it should be compatible with iPad 2 models and younger and all iPad mini models. Not all features will work on all models.

Availability

Apple offers iOS 9 beta to the public via its public beta testing scheme, though please don’t use your main device as a beta testing unit – things go wrong during beta testing and this is why such testing exists. iOS 9 beta is currently at version 5 and introduces some new tweaks that may interest iPad users, including slightly tweaked keyboard icons for Delete, Shift and Dictation.

Apple Reports Record Third Quarter Results

Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2015 third quarter ended June 27, 2015. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $49.6 billion and quarterly net profit of $10.7 billion, or $1.85 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $37.4 billion and net profit of $7.7 billion, or $1.28 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. iPad Pro And Mini 4 On Course But No iPad Air 3?

As rumors of the bigger iPad Pro, mid-sized iPad Air 3 and the compact iPad Mini 4 are making waves, a brand new report from China has given away key information about Apple’s tablet lineup. As it turns out, there will be no Apple iPad Air 2 successor, or iPad Air 3, planned for this year.

According to Chinese publication Economic Daily News, Apple will not be releasing a successor to the iPad Air 2 in 2015. The news source cites Foxconn’s 2015 orders to confirm this news. Foxconn has reportedly received orders only for the 12.9-inch jumbo version, dubbed Apple iPad Pro and the mini variant Apple iPad Mini 4 with 7.9-inch display. There appears to be no medium-sized tablet for 2015; instead Apple is going for the kill with the bigger iPad Pro.

On the other hand, Phone Arena says Apple is gearing up to release the iPad Pro to be the flagship tablet for 2015. This means the iPad Air 2 successor will be postponed to 2016. If not, the other possibility is to offer a slightly refreshed variant of the iPad Air with minimal configuration change, similar to last year’s iPad Mini 3. Meanwhile, tablet sales have not been significant this year. It is worth noting that a recent DigiTimes report says, “Most tablet players may see difficulties achieving their shipment goals for 2015 or making profits from the product line.”

As far as the key iPad Pro specifications go, the tablet is expected to feature four speakers, which will be located on each corner of the device. To top it off, an additional connector port will apparently be part of the upcoming slate and it is rumored to be the USB Type-C model. In the meantime, the Wall Street Journal reports the iPad Pro will house a stylus in addition to the optional keyboard and mouse. Moreover, Apple is believed to be marketing the iPad Pro for both professional and educational markets, in order to give tough competition to the upcoming Microsoft Surface Pro 4.

Furthermore, the 12.9-inch display clad iPad Pro will reportedly be complemented by 2,732 × 2,048 pixels resolution. Notably, these display dimensions translate to a pixel density of 264 ppi, says MacRumors. But readers should note that Apple has not confirmed the iPad Pro specifications thus far.

Security Flaw Revealed In iOS And OS X

Six university researchers have revealed deadly zero-day flaws in Apple's iOS and OS X, claiming it is possible to crack Apple's keychain, break app sandboxes and bypass its App Store security checks so that attackers can steal passwords from any installed app including the native email client without being detected.

The team was able to upload malware to the Apple app store (passing the vetting process without triggering alerts) that could raid the keychain to steal passwords for services including iCloud and the Mail app, and all those stored within Google Chrome.

Lead researcher Luyi Xing told El Reg he and his team complied with Apple's request to withhold publication of the research for six months, but had not heard back as of the time of writing.

They say the holes are still present in the Apple platforms meaning their work will likely be consumed by attackers looking to weaponize the work.

Apple Recall Notice For Beats Pill XL Customers

Apple® today announced a voluntary recall of Beats Pill® XL speakers, including a refund for customers. Apple has determined that, in rare cases, the battery in the Beats Pill XL may overheat and pose a fire safety risk. The recall does not affect any other Beats or Apple products.

Because customer safety is the company’s top priority, Apple is asking customers to stop using their Beats Pill XL speakers. Customers who purchased a Beats Pill XL speaker should visit www.apple.com/support/beats-pillxl-recall for details about how to return their product to Apple, and how to receive an Apple Store® credit or electronic payment of $325.

iOS 9 Coming This Year, What Can We Expect?

The next major version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 9, is already in the works at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino. There are few concrete details on iOS 9 yet, but rumors suggest the update may focus more on optimization and stability improvements rather than major design changes and new features.

Expect some changes, however. Siri improvements, a new San Francisco font, a HomeKit "Home" app, iPad split-screen multitasking, and transit directions may be added in iOS 9. With iOS 7, Apple introduced a major design overhaul, and with iOS 8, the company debuted features like Continuity, Apple Pay, and new app abilities like extensions and widgets.

It may seem like Apple will have a hard time marketing an iOS 9 update that doesn't come with the flashy additions we got in iOS 7 and iOS 8, but a new version of iOS that fine tunes what Apple introduced in previous iOS updates will likely be very popular with people who have suffered from bugs in iOS 8.

Since iOS 8's release, some of Apple's user base has been unhappy with the update, vocally criticizing the company for pushing out new features without resolving lingering bugs. iOS 8 has suffered from an above average number of bugs since its September introduction, causing issues like slow Wi-Fi, battery drain, screen rotation problems, Bluetooth connectivity failures, and more.

One of the major optimizations that might be in store for iOS 9 is a reduction in the amount of space the operating system takes up. iOS 8 saw slow adoption rates for the first few months following its release, possibly because of the sheer size of the operating system. iOS 8 requires more than 2GB of free space to install, which can difficult to clear up on devices limited to 8GB or 16GB of storage.

According to rumors, iOS 9 will be compatible with devices using Apple's A5 processor and it may even offer improved performance on these devices compared to iOS 8. iOS devices with an A5 chip include the iPhone 4s, the original iPad mini, the iPad 2, and the fifth-generation iPod touch.

Apple may also convert many IMAP-based applications like Notes, Reminders, and Calendar to its own iCloud Drive system, improving communication in these apps between devices and increasing security. A "Trusted Wi-Fi" feature may allow Macs and iOS devices to connect to trusted wireless routers with no additional security measures, while non-trusted routers would have a heavily encrypted wireless connection.

The much-anticipated split-screen multitasking feature may also be included with iOS 9, allowing iPad users to open two apps at once or two versions of the same app. This would let a user open two side-by-side Safari windows or two Pages documents on their iPads, for example.

The upcoming WWDC will likely see the debut of HomeKit, Apple's home automation platform. A dedicated "Home" app within iOS 9 may accompany the launch, giving HomeKit users a central location to add new HomeKit-compatible devices, group devices by room, and control them.

Bug Causes Messages To Crash, iPhone To Reboot

A newly found bug surrounding iOS and Messages has emerged that causes the app to continuously crash when a certain text is received. If the text is received while the phone is on the lock screen, it also causes your iPhone to reboot without any notice or explanation. This is obviously a very big problem for iPhone users, especially those with mischievous friends and enemies.

This isn’t the first time a bug like this has emerged; in fact, it has happened several times in the past. Apple usually fixes the issue in a timely matter, but until it’s fixed, it is a rather malicious problem.

Thankfully, the ability to crash Messages and reboot someone’s iPhone is limited to iPhone-to-iPhone communication (Update: Android to iPhone as well) and a certain specific strand of text. Since the character strand is so specific, most people should never accidentally experience the crashing. Anyone who does experience the crashing was likely singled out on purpose as a target.

If you want to see examples of the problem .... Read the rest of the story >> HERE.

Restaurant Table Tablets: Gimmick Or Helpful?

Tablets for ordering and tipping in restaurants can now be found on tables in eateries including Outback Steakhouse, Olive Garden, Chili's, and more. The practice has clear financial benefits for the restaurants, but does it actually improve the dining experience?

A new trend is sweeping the restaurant scene: Tablets can be found at the tables in many eateries, serving as interactive menus that take on some of the workload of wait staff. You'll already find them in Chili's Grill & Bar, and many Outbacks and Applebee's locations. Olive Garden is the latest big chain to announce a nationwide roll out.

But, can a tablet really replace a waitress? Is this just a gimmick, or does it improve your dining experience? We decided to take a look at the pros and cons of restaurant tablets.

The Pros of Restaurant Tablets

For restaurants, these tablets are sold as a way to increase the take. According to the suppliers, they cut down on the time people spend in the restaurant, they encourage people to spend more money, and they boost customer loyalty. But how do they work from a customer perspective? Here are some of the major benefits:

  • Order when you're ready. You don't have to catch the eye of a passing waiter, you can just tap on the tablet to order a new dish or a refill.
  • Entertainment at the table. Most of these tablets offer games, for a small fee, that are suitable for keeping children amused, or act as ice-breakers for adults.
  • Pay when you're ready. You no longer have to wait for a member of staff to be free before you can ask for the bill, pay it, and leave.

These are the key attractions for diners, but there are other potential benefits that can be good for the business and the customer. It's possible to include more detailed descriptions of dishes and photographs. There shouldn't be any errors in the order, at least none that can be attributed to the servers. Restaurants can appeal for instant feedback, which should help them improve. People are much more likely to complete a survey or answer questions while they are still there, than go online using a receipt link when they get home.

On the other hand, some benefits for the restaurant may actually turn into costs for the diner's waistline. Chili's reported a 20% bump in dessert sales during testing, because it can play adverts for irresistible sweets while diners are on the main course.

It's important to note that not every tablet system offers the same range of options, and there are certain limitations. For example, you can only pay if the tablet has a card reader, and that means you'll still need wait staff if you want to pay cash. Different chains also have different rules; at Applebee's the server has to take your first drink order, and after that you can re-order from the tablet.

The Cons of Restaurant Tablets

These systems are obviously pretty expensive for restaurants to roll out, and there's a maintenance cost. You could argue that the fact they're encouraging people to spend more and eat more isn't good for diners, though it's obviously great for restaurants. There are a few other major downsides:

  • There's a learning curve. While people get used to tablets at restaurant tables, staff have to explain to diners how they work, when they could be taking orders. The initial result can be a slowdown in service.
  • Losing the human touch. You may feel that a little chat with the waiting staff is part of the dining experience. Tablets don't replace servers, but they definitely cut down on human interaction.
  • You can't ask questions. What if you'd like to ask about the specific ingredients of a dish, you'd like another napkin, or you want to query the bill? You're going to need a server.

According to one of the biggest providers, Ziosk, tablets also increase tipping. But this may be because the restaurant can set the default suggestion, rather than because of any perceived improvement for customers. For example, Chili's defaults to a 20% tip, and you have to alter that before swiping your card if you feel it's too high.

There are other potential problems. What happens if your tablet isn't working properly? What if you tap to order the wrong dish or your kids do? What if you want some time away from technology? Tablets can also act as advertising windows at your table, and that could definitely detract from the experience. Much depends on exactly how these systems are configured, and, at the moment, most restaurants are still working that out.

Tablets aren't going to be a good fit for all restaurants, but it looks like big chains are seeing a clear benefit. The danger is that they focus on their own bottom line to the detriment of the dining experience. If restaurants try to replace staff with tablets, then it's easy to see how the standard of service is likely to decline. However, as an enhancement, the optional convenience of ordering or paying without having to call busy wait staff over could be a really good thing all round.

What do you think? Have you used a tablet in a restaurant? Did you enjoy the experience or not?

Apple Watch Is No Harder To Steal Than A Rolex,

But It Should Be!

An excerpt from today's story on The Verge.

Here's the sad truth: the very expensive Apple Watch is now also the easiest Apple gadget to steal. For Apple's smartwatch, there is no such thing as Activation Lock, the anti-theft measure that makes stolen iPhones useless to thieves.

Introduced in 2013, Activation Lock requires your Apple ID password after a factory reset and before it can be activated and used once more. If someone else has your iPhone but doesn't have your password, all they can really do is sell Apple's smartphone for parts (or, you know, be a decent person and return it). Police immediately praised the feature and urged everyone to switch it on.

The Apple Watch doesn't have Activation Lock or any equivalent designed for a wrist-worn device. Nor can you locate it with Apple's "Find My iPhone" app, which can track the last known whereabouts of your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or even a Mac. That second part makes sense since the Apple Watch doesn't have a GPS chip inside.

But the smartwatch can connect to known Wi-Fi networks, so theoretically Apple could offer some idea of where it last held an internet connection, even if there's no way to guarantee that's where your Watch stayed.

As of now, the option's just not there. Your Watch can help find your phone, but nothing exists to help recover the Watch.

With the product being so new, there haven't been many headlines about Apple Watch muggings or ugly theft incidents yet, and hopefully there won't be. But take a look at Craigslist or eBay, and you'll see Apple's smartwatch selling for way above its retail value. For thieves, the temptation is there.

Apple can play a huge part in dissuading them by making sure your Watch stays yours — or at least rendering it useless to anyone else.

Cortana App For iOS And Android

There was a time when it seemed that Microsoft was developing its voice-controlled, digital assistant Cortana to draw iPhone and Android users to Windows Phone. That might have even been true, once, but it certainly isn’t the case anymore, as the company is planning a standalone Cortana app for iOS and Android.

Initially compared to Siri and Google Now, Microsoft has been referring to Cortana as a “personal assistant” for some time now. At times, it seems that the company goes out of its way to avoid referring to Cortana as software, preferring to refer to it as “her” and “she” instead. A large part of Cortana’s identity is drawn from the character of the same name in the Halo franchise.

More so than either Siri or Google Now, Cortana makes use of artificial intelligence, drawing from an internal Microsoft project called Einstein. “This kind of technology, which can read and understand email, will play a central role in the next roll out of Cortana, which we are working on now for the fall time frame,” said managing director of Microsoft Research Eric Horvitz, speaking to Reuters.

Apple And Google Plan Fix For 'Freak' Security Bug

Apple and Google said on Tuesday that they have developed fixes to mitigate the newly uncovered 'Freak' security flaw affecting mobile devices and Mac computers. The vulnerability in web encryption technology could enable attackers to spy on communications of users of Apple's Safari browser and Google Android browser, according to researchers who uncovered the flaw.

Apple spokesman Ryan James said the computer had developed a software update to remediate the vulnerability, which would be pushed out next week. Google spokeswoman Liz Markman said the company had also developed a patch, which it has provided to partners. She declined to say when users could expect to receive those upgrades. Google typically does not directly push out Android software updates. Instead they are handled by device makers and mobile carriers.

The Washington Post reported that the bug left users of Apple and Google devices vulnerable to cyberattack when visiting hundreds of thousands of websites, including Whitehouse.gov, NSA.gov and FBI.gov. Whitehouse.gov and FBI.gov have been fixed, but NSA.gov remains vulnerable, the paper cited Johns Hopkins cryptographer Matthew D. Green as saying.

A group of nine researchers discovered that they could force web browsers to use an form of encryption that was intentionally weakened to comply with U.S. government regulations that ban American companies from exporting the strongest encryption standards, according to the paper.

Once they caused the site to use the weaker export encryption standard, they were then able to break the encryption within a few hours. That could allow hackers to steal data and potentially launch attacks on the sites themselves by taking over elements on a page, the newspaper reported.

Markman said that Google advises all websites to disable support for the less-secure, export-grade encryption. "Android's connections to most websites - which include Google sites, and others without export certificates - are not subject to this vulnerability," she added.

The group of researchers dubbed the flaw Freak, for "Factoring RSA-EXPORT Keys," according to a website where they described the vulnerability.

Is An Apple Car Speeding Into View?

The mere prospect of a car from Apple is sending shockwaves across the tech world. So, what could Apple be planning exactly?

The most salient rumor so far is that Apple is developing an electric car to challenge Tesla. Which begs the question that just about everyone is asking: How does Apple get from an iPhone to a car?

Though a car is a big leap from a handheld device, the reported move by Apple shouldn’t be a complete surprise. With Tesla leading the way on electric cars and Google working on self-driving car technology, the hub of leading-edge car technology is shifting to Silicon Valley.

That’s because the car is quickly becoming a complex mobile device: a rolling computer loaded with chips, software, and wireless connectivity. And higher-end cars are brimming with artificial intelligence that controls the car’s operation, prevents crashes, and responds to voice commands.

That’s right in Apple’s wheelhouse. “In our view, as more things become computers, we believe Apple is very well positioned [to develop] hardware and software innovations together across a vast digital ecosystem,” said Brian White of Cantor Fitzgerald, in a note to investors on Tuesday, commenting on the prospects for an Apple car. White also cited comments last year from Ford that the car is “the smartphone of the future.”

Here’s what reports have said so far:
  • Several hundred Apple employees are working “secretly” on an Apple-branded electric vehicle, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing sources. Code-named “Titan,” the initial design is said to be similar to a minivan.
  • The car would be self-driving, according to Reuters. The focus is on “electric and connected-car technologies, while studying the potential for automated driving,” Reuters reported, citing a source.
  • Apple has met with manufacturers including high-end vehicle contract manufacturer Magna Steyr, according to The Wall Street Journal. Customers of Magna Steyr – a unit of Canadian auto supplier Magna International – include Chrysler, Mercedes, and BMW. Apple may be exploring limited initial manufacturing by partnering with an outside manufacturer like Steyr. Which makes sense since electric cars are still produced in relatively small quantities.
  • Apple CEO Tim Cook approved the project a year ago, according to the Journal. Product design Vice President Steve Zadesky – a former Ford engineer – leads the group. Zadesky was one of the leaders at Apple that developed the iPod and iPhone. The team, working at a secret location near Apple headquarters in Cupertino, is “researching different types of robotics, metals and materials consistent with automobile manufacturing,” the Journal said, citing sources.
  • Time reported that star designer Marc Newson, who joined Apple last year, already has experience in car design. Newson designed the Ford 021C concept car that was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1999.
  • Apple already offers CarPlay. CarPlay puts popular iPhone functions on a big screen in the car’s dashboard, offering voice control and interaction through Siri in order to make using the iPhone eyes- and hands-free.

So, how feasible is all of this? “Apple has had trouble with the contract manufacturing of its phones. How is it going to get cars manufactured?” Erik Gordon, a professor at Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, told FoxNews.com. “Will its software for connected and autonomous vehicles give us cars that drive into each other until Apple sends out a patch fixing the bugs?”

Needless to say, those are problems Apple is likely working on right now, but Professor Gordon has a point. Designing and building a self-driving electric car would probably be Apple’s greatest technological challenge yet. So, don’t expect to find an Apple car dealership sandwiched between a Cadillac and BMW dealer on auto row any time soon.

News About iPad Clones

Nokia recently unveiled a snazzy new Android tablet that looked suspiciously like the iPad mini. Now, Chinese company Onda has done one better with a dual-booting iPad Air knockoff that offers high-end specs at competitive price.

The Onda V919 3G Air features a sleek aluminum design and a 9.7-inch display with resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels (same as the iPad Air 2). It also packs a 64-bit Intel quad core processor, 2GB of RAM, 64GB of storage with microSD support for up to 128GB of additional storage, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and 3G connectivity.

Switching between Android 4.4 KitKat (sorry, no Lollipop here) and Windows 8.1 on the new tablet is as simple as pressing a button on the device. It’s also nice to see dual-booting devices making a comeback after earlier efforts were seemingly blocked by both Microsoft and Google.

So how much would you expect to pay for all that? The Onda V919 3G is available to order online for as little as ¥ 1,199.00 ($193), putting most other full-sized tablets to shame. Of course, there’s still a lot we don’t know about Onda’s new device—battery life, for instance—though from a distance this looks like a pretty great deal.

Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results

Apple® yesterday announced financial results for its fiscal 2015 first quarter ended December 27, 2014. The Company posted record quarterly revenue of $74.6 billion and record quarterly net profit of $18 billion, or $3.06 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $57.6 billion and net profit of $13.1 billion, or $2.07 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 39.9 percent compared to 37.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 65 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

The results were fueled by all-time record revenue from iPhone® and Mac® sales as well as record performance of the App Store℠. iPhone unit sales of 74.5 million also set a new record.

“We’d like to thank our customers for an incredible quarter, which saw demand for Apple products soar to an all-time high,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Our revenue grew 30 percent over last year to $74.6 billion, and the execution by our teams to achieve these results was simply phenomenal.”
