Safari And Secure Websites

I was asked a question today about doing online banking from your iPad, "How do you know it's secure since the 'https' doesn't show in the address bar. Here's the answer.

When you go to a secure (encrypted) website the Safari browser tab will show a tiny lock symbol to the right of the site's name. If the text and lock icon are gray then the site has a standard digital identity certificate. If the tab text and lock icon are green then the site has an Extended Validation (EV) certificate.

The EV certificate requires more extensive identity verification from the website so it's better, more secure, when you see the green.

Just remember though, if you are on a public wi fi connection like the one at McDonald's or even the public Library ANYONE on that connection can possibly view EVERYTHING you do! Even if it has the little gray or green lock.
