Give up on the finger!!

I couldn't help noticing that most of you with iPads attending the last users group meeting are still using your fingers to navigate around the touch screen. I've been an iPad and iPhone user for over a year now and fairly early on decided that my podgy (and sometimes sweaty!) fingers were not the ideal interface for these sophisticated machines, especially the iPhone where the alpha numerics are really difficult to pinpoint with any degree of accuracy.

I decided to buy a stylus and it made a huge difference, so my recommendation to all of you that are still struggling with the fingers is to do the same and invest in one. I bought a griffin which seems to be about one of the best and is reasonably priced. Their website is http://store.griffintechnology.com/stylus,  & although they advertise them for about $20 you can get better deals through Amazon or Ebay.

It makes typing a whole lot quicker and it is also much easier to select icons and text.

How to purchase an APP

Buying Applications

When you find an application you want in the App Store, you can purchase and download it to iPad. If the application is free, you can download it without charge after providing your iTunes account information.

Once you download an application, it’s installed immediately.

Purchase and download an application:

1 Tap the price, then tap Buy App (or tap Free, then tap Install App).
2 Sign in to your account if requested, then tap OK.
If you don’t have an iTunes Store account, tap Create New Account to set one up.

Purchases are charged to your iTunes Store account. If you make additional purchases within fifteen minutes, you don’t have to enter your password again.

You can use iTunes Store gift cards, gift certificates, or other promotional codes to make purchases. When you sign in to your account, your remaining store credit appears with your account information at the bottom of most App Store screens.

Enter a redemption code: Tap Featured or Top Charts, scroll to the bottom the screen, tap Redeem, then follow the onscreen instructions.

See the status of application downloads: After you begin downloading an application, its icon appears on the Home screen and shows a progress indicator.

If a download is interrupted, iPad starts the download again the next time it connects to the Internet. Or, if you open iTunes on your computer, iTunes completes the download to your iTunes library (if your computer is connected to the Internet and signed in to the same iTunes account).

BTW iTunes will refer to your apps as purchases whether they cost you money or they are for free. Free is still Free.

You can also purchase and download Apps on your computer through iTunes. Just go to the iTunes store, search for the app and it's more or less the same procedure with the additional task of syncing it to your ipad or iphone once it's downloaded.

Hello, I am new with the Apple Users Group. I attended the second meeting on Friday Mar 23 and met a lot of nice people. I have been using the iPad now for about 1 year and have learned the basic way around it. I am willing to help anyone if I can. I am not an expert, I just have a little more experience at it. I own an iPad and an iPhone. I really enjoy both. I would have posted earlier, but I am having a lot of trouble with my google account. Hopefully it will work this time.

This is a test post to see if it finally goes through to the blog. If it does, later on or tomorrow I will be listing a few free apps you can download to your iphone or ipad. I will also post the directions on how to download the apps. (very easy).

If you have any immediate questions you would like to ask me please email me at my regular email address as I am not too fond of google right now, sandrab215@aol.com. I will try to answer your questions regarding the Apple iPad or Apple iPhone 4. I must tell you though, that I own the first generation iPad and not the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4. There shouldn't be too much of a difference if any in how you are able to do things with the products.

Creating Your Google Account

In order to write a post or comment on one you must first create a Google Account if you don't already have one. Google has recently changed the account creation process. The default causes you to make a Gmail address as your login. You don't have to do it that way if you don't want to. You can use any email that belongs to you IF you use the link at the right in the sidebar item called "Create Your Google Account".

45. Grab and Share an Image

If you’re surfing the web and come across a picture that you want to e-mail to a buddy, how do you do it? Simply find the image you’re interested in and then touch and hold the image, then tap Save Image. The photo is automatically saved in to your photo library. From here you can share the image with friends via e-mail or your Mobile Me gallery.

34. How to Modify Date & Time on iPad

1. Select ‘Settings’ icon on the ipad home screen.

2. Then tap on ‘General’ option on the left column of settings screen.

3. Now select ‘Date & Time’ option on the right column of settings screen.

4. Under Date & Time settings screen, tap ‘Set Date & Time’.

On this screen you can set relevant date and time on the iPad. You can also make selection for time zone and time format among 24hours or 12hours.

35. How to Read Newspapers on iPad

1. Tap on application icon on iPad home screen to check apps installed on your iPad. You can goto App store and add applications for top newspapers like New York Times (free app). Apps are also available to access news content from BBC News, AP and Then Wall Street Journal.

Apple Unveils New iPad With 4G LTE

Apple Inc. took the wraps off a new iPad tablet with a sharper display and the ability to connect to the Internet on 4G broadband networks, as the electronics giant strives to stay ahead of rivals in a market it has helped create.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook took the stage Wednesday in San Francisco to demonstrate the new product at an invitation-only event. "In many ways the iPad is reinventing portable computing, and it's outstripping the wildest of predictions," Mr. Cook told the audience.

The new iPad will have a high-resolution "retina" display and connect to 4G LTE services that are offered by carriers like AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless. The tablet will also have a five megapixel camera and a microphone to take dictation.

Apple said the new iPad will start at $499 for Wi-Fi only models—the same starting price as the previous model. Models capable of 4G speeds will start at $629, not including service plans. The new iPad will be available starting on March 16 in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France and Germany. 

The newest iPad looks very similar to earlier models but is slightly heavier and thicker than the iPad 2. It weights 1.4 pounds, compared with 1.33 pounds for the predecessor. Apple said the battery will last 10 hours on normal usage, and 9 hours for 4G usage. Read more....HERE.

Hello Fellow Apple users!!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to let everyone know that I am also available to help with some questions about Apple products. I myself own an iMac and an iPod Touch. I did own an iPhone for about a month but it was with Sprint and the service both here and back in Upstate New York stunk!!!

I have to tell you once you go Mac, you will wonder why you ever did stay with a PC/windows as long as you have. As for the iPad, I am still on the fence. I am not sure that it is worth the money while there are other products on the market like the Amazon Kindle and Kindle Fire.

What are some of your thoughts???

WordPerfect for the Mac?

I was asked about WordPerfect for the Mac and here's what I've found. A word of caution, this may be a bit too technical for some. We can only hope that Corel will finally release a new version of WordPerfect Mac sometime soon.

13. Type Foreign Language on iPad on International Keyboard

It supports lot of languages including Japanese, Chinese Handwriting, Chinese Pinyin and more. While using Chinese Handwriting language keyboard, you can draw symbol with finger and matching characters will be shown for quick selection and typing.

iPad 4 destroys iPad 3 !!!

iPad 4 shows up in amazing concept video, destroys the iPad 3

Countdown to the iPad 3 launch: six days and counting. We’re all intrigued to see what Apple’s got up its sleeves, but a video that’s cropped up on the web showing what a future iPad could be capable of has just spoilt us rotten. Read on to see what the iPad 4 could look like.

The video in question is by famed Apple fakers Aatma Studios, and the level of CGI sheen is admirable, given that it’s all cobbled together out of nothing more concrete than hopes and dreams.

The iPad 3 is likely to boast a far prettier display and some beefed up processing power, but that’s nothing on this concept, which sports an edge-to-edge display in the style of the rumoured Samsung Galaxy B.

It’s also got special magnetic NFC powers: snap two iPads together and the displays merge to form one larger image. So far, so 2013. But then things get mental. Aatma’s video sees the connected devices beam out holographic inputs and graphics from all angles.

Projected game controls fire out of either side while a 3D, holographic version of Madden is played out across both screens. We may be waiting a while for all this, but we’d recommend you watch the video nonetheless. Warning: the iPad 3 may look a bit tame after you’ve seen it.

Thanks to our brilliant, sharp-eyed readers we’ve got some fresh icon easter eggs to reveal. Scroll down, the NEW ones are marked for your convenience too. We’re good like that…

If you’re an iPhone, iPad, iPod or Mac owner you’ll spend hours each day gawping at Apple icons. But you might never have realised they hold secrets, hidden histories and subtle nods to Apple in-jokes. Do you know the hidden meanings your Apple gadget holds in plain sight? Read on, and we’ll spill them all!

iPhone, iPod touch and iPad icons

Fire up the iPhone homescreen and you’ll see a host of standard-issue icons. But there’s more than meets the eye.

Maps icon

The map on the iPhone Maps icon? It’s Apple’s home address. Number 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino. The address itself is an in-joke amongst programmers, describing a never-ending loop of code, and also describes the circular road Apple’s campus is built upon. You can see that circular road, and Interstate 280 which flies right by it, in all their glory within the Maps icon, along with a pin to indicate Apple’s front door.

iPod Artists icon

Dive in to the iPhone or iPod touch’s iPod function and cast your eyes toward the bottom of the screen. There you’ll see an Artists option, illustrated as all good bands are, by a man screaming his lungs out at a microphone. But look closer. Does the silhouette look familiar? It should do to U2 fans, since it’s lead singer, and some-time Apple collaborator, Bono.

iTunes Starbucks icon

In the US, Apple and Starbucks launched a special edition of the iTunes Store together, accessible only while supping fresh java in one of Starbucks’ stores. The partnering was smart in several ways, letting Starbucks hawk their own collections of music, while Apple capitalised on customers’ downtime to make sales.

However, it also marked the first time Apple deviated from their own Human Interface Guidelines, the creed by which all iOS app developers live and die. Check out the screengrab, and you’ll see the Starbucks icon in full colour glory, whereas all other iTunes interface elements are strictly monotone affairs.

iBooks Browse icon

Fire up your iPhone, iPod or iPad for that matter and dive into iBooks. Take a look inside the iBooks Store and glance down at the Browse icon. Whose glasses are those? They look awfully like those of Apple founder, CEO and interface-tweaker-in-chief, Steve Jobs. It seems the Podfather is also a bit of a bookworm.

Find My iPhone icon

If you’ve installed Find My iPhone on your iPhone, iPod or iPad take a look at the map on its icon. It seems to be indicating an iPhone has been located in New York City. Strange, considering Apple’s spiritual and physical home is in Cupertino, on the other side of the US. So, what’s in NYC? Steve Jobs’ Manhattan apartment perhaps? There’s a good chance. Until recently Jobs owned the only duplex apartment in the iconic San Remo building, until he sold it to U2’s Bono for $15 million.

Mac icons

Hidden messages within Mac icons are much more common than their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad counterparts. Apple’s designers frequently shoehorn in neat touches, jokes and cryptic references. See if you’ve spotted all of these.

Stickies icon NEW

The Stickies app isn’t particularly obvious, but its icon easter egg certainly is. The phone number 555-7361 and the name Lou can clearly be seen scribbled on its logo. Those who watch a lot of films or TV might recognise that 555 area code, it’s reserved for fictional mentions, so don’t go dialing it now, will you?

Aperture icon NEW

If you’ve splashed out on Apple’s imaging and photography application Aperture, you’ll be able to gawp at its icon, featuring a lens which is “Designed by Apple in California” and reading “50mm 1:1.4” Those Apple designers are nothing if not fastidious in their attention to detail, and by crikey, that’s a lovely looking lens they’ve created.

Interface Builder icon NEW

What sort of pencils do Apple designers use? Open up the icon for the Apple Interface Builder, a tool used by programmers to create the screens you see on iPhone and iPad apps, and take a squiz. There’s a drawing of a pencil, a set square and a paintbrush. The pencil is helpfully labelled as a “no 2 graphite pencil with eraser”. Heading to the art supplies shop yet?

Keynote 2008 icon NEW

Apple’s presentation application forms part of iWork, but while that might seem dry and uninspiring check out the icon for it. There’s a lectern, and a Q4 2008 report… but on that report are written the lyrics from the musical Spring Awakening. Who says business can’t also have a hint of showbiz glitz? The significance of Spring Awakening isn’t known.

Console 10.5.6 icon NEW

An error message Apple meant to appear? That’s what’s on the icon for Mac OS X’s console. The app is designed to show what the Mac’s been up to behind the scenes. That includes errors, but that is the Error AY7:36 shown on the icon? So far our research has come to nothing. Do you know?

Photo Booth icon NEW

We’re hearing that the woman pictured in the photos within Photo Booth’s icon are the developer of the app. Although we can’t confirm that, even after a lot of fruitless Googling. Can you identify her? Either way, finding actual photos inside the Photo Booth icon was a nice surprise.

iCal icon NEW

If you put the icon for Apple’s iCal calendar app into the OS X dock, you’ll see it shows today’s date. However, look it up in the Applications folder and you’ll see its default setting: July 17. That’s the day Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced it in front of crowds at the Macworld Expo 2002.

One chip to rule them all NEW

Check out the icons for Apple’s firmware update utilities and you’ll see there’s a silicon chip indicated on their icons. Open the icon at full size and you can see the chip’s model number. So what, you might say? That chip pops up all over the place, from firmware updates to the Mac System Profiler. The significance of the numbers isn’t clear. Can you crack it? The code is: 810-54-2136-1 RM-NCE-1 6319-415-1239.

Windows computer icons

Access a networked Windows PC from a Mac and you’ll see a tiny beige monitor next to it. It’s small, nondescript and seems innocent. But dig out the full-size version of that icon and you’ll see the monitor is displaying a “blue screen of death” error message, a sly poke at Windows perceived unreliability by Apple designers.

Mac Mail icon

It’s so small, and semi-transparent, it’s almost invisible. But the Mac Mail icon which sits in the dock of every Mac holds a postmark labeling its origin as Cupertino, California. Of course, that’s the home of Apple. Logical, yes. Obvious? Not at all. There’s even a friendly little “Hello from Cupertino” message baked into the icon. Neat touch, no?

Apple Java icon

Java isn’t owned by Apple, but there’s an app included with OS X to run Java code. It was made by Apple designers, so obviously includes some creative flourish. On first look it’s a simple coffee cup resting on a napkin. Nothing unusual there, just a play on words around the Java name. But fire up the full size icon, and you’ll see the napkin has a doodling on it. That doodling is genuine Java code. Now that’s attention to detail.

Apple Font Book icon

Apple’s computers have long been a favourite of writers, designers and editors of every persuasion. The Font Book app is, therefore, an often used part of OS X. Its icon, however, holds a neat in-joke. The letters used to make it are A, F and K. In internet-speak, AFK stands for Away From Keyboard.

Apple Dictionary icon

There’s some more Apple wordplay at work on the cover of the dictionary featured in the Apple Dictionary icon. The words “Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit Amet Etiam” are clearly seen when the icon is viewed at full size. That’s latin for “Hello world! Etcetera”… well, it’s all up for debate. Have a look at the comments section below and join the debate!

Apple Textedit icon

The Apple Textedit icon is itself a work of literary genius. Open it in full and you’ll see a speech written across the surface of its virtual notepad. It’s an an extract of the monologue from Apple’s Crazy Ones advert, and is signed by John Appleseed, a name Apple often uses as a placeholder for names in its address books.

Old iTunes icons

Apple replaced the iTunes icon with a solid blue bauble in its latest incarnation, but previous iterations featured a musical note resting on a shining silver CD. Open up the full size icon file and you’d see that image of a CD was precise down to the finest detail: laser etched on its inside edge were the words “iTunes 7” and “Apple 2006”.
