Time Magazine has named iPhone 5
its Gadget of the Year for 2012. The device is “one of the most
artfully polished gadgets anyone’s ever built,” says Time’s Harry
McCracken. He highlights the new thinner design and the camera’s
“particularly well-done panorama mode.” McCracken concludes, “[W]hen it
comes to melding hardware, software and services so tightly that the

Taking The Plunge Over ....
.... The Digital Cliff, not the fiscal one! That's what it probably feels like for some of us when we get a new electronic device.
About 30 years ago I used Apple IIe computers as manufacturing tools for testing products on the assembly line. In recent decades I've had iPods (Shuffle, Nano and Video). But no other fine products from, who some would call, the greatest engineering company in the world. That is until the other day.
When I started the Apple Users Group, last year about this time, it was to bring together the Apple products users in Oak Run so they could help each other learn and enjoy their toys and tools. And we've had some very talented people provide help along the way. Bob, Sandra, Michael and Richard are all very excited about and knowledgeable when it comes to Apple toys.
I've seen the rest of you express that excitement as you've learned how to use the various products and software that Apple has to offer. Most of what we did and learned over the past year centered around iPads and iPhones and their operating systems. It was great to see someone's eyes light up when a problem was solved or a method was learned.
That excitement worked on me over time. I have enjoyed providing the means for you all to meet and share your troubles and solutions. But, I was missing something. I needed a toy too. So I've taken the plunge! I've gotten an iPad, 3rd gen, 64GB, Wi-Fi, refurbished, from the Apple Store.
Happy Birthday to me!! It came a few days before my BD but I didn't wait to open it. And I've been playing with it every day since. I must admit that as a rule I love toys, especially electronic ones, and this one is no exception to that rule. For the most part it's been very intuitive, but, after using a mouse and 101-key keyboard for so many decades I'm now discovering the joys and sorrows of computing on a tablet.
I look forward to the coming year when many of you will be teaching me a thing or two about tapping and swiping. Until then, I wish every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
iPhone Help (again!)
Just when I think I've mastered my phone......I want to delete many pictures I have on my phone. Many months ago someone told me, step by step, how to delete them. Well, now I want to do it again but iTunes has a new look and previous instructions no longer seem to work. Also, I downloaded my Christmas CDs and planned to put them on my phone, (have purchased music on my phone) but I don't seem to be able to download them onto my phone from my laptop! Can someone help me with these two problems? Thanks!

Cellphones And Tablets Are Great For ......
...... Sharing Photos And Bacteria!
We love our smart phones and tablets a lot. But the next time you take your phone to lunch, hand it to a coworker to share photos, or bring it to the gym, consider this, bacteria from a phone can cause flu, pinkeye or diarrhea. Yuck.
People are
just as likely to get sick from their phones as from handles of the bathroom. That's according to a physician interviewed by the Wall Street Journal about the hazards of taking your cell phone everywhere, and then passing it to friends to share an image or message. You don't have to be a germophobe to dread that bit of news.
A lab tested eight randomly selected phones from a Chicago office and all phones showed abnormally high numbers of coliforms, a bacteria that indicates fecal contamination. Of the eight phones tested, there were between 2,700 and 4,200 units of coliform bacteria. In drinking water, the limit is less than 1 unit per 100 ml of water.
The tricky part? Most household cleaners and disinfectants can harm your phone's screen or case. The WSJ has the full report and some suggestions for avoiding the worst of it. Worth a read as we enter the flu season.

iOS 6 Tracks Users For Advertisers
Users got more than an improved Siri and the new Passbook app when they upgraded to iOS 6. Apple's latest mobile OS has given advertisers a brand new way to track your Web surfing.
It's called Identifiers for Advertisers, or IFA. When you upgrade your existing gadget - or buy a new iPhone 5 - that gadget will be assigned a random IFA number. When you look at a Web page or an app, advertisers see your number and the site you were browsing. Once they know that, it suddenly becomes easy for them to target ads directly to you.
Apple hasn't advertised this feature much, so not many people know how to turn it off. Plus, the setting isn't where you'd expect. You have to go to Settings>>General>>About>>Advertising. Look for the section labeled "Limit Ad Tracking". Confusingly, by default this is set to Off. In order to stop advertisers from seeing your unique number, you have to switch the
slider to On.

Hotmail Exchange Account Password Problem
We had a question during our last class about an error message that had to do with the Hotmail Exchange Account password. The Apple Support Forum addresses this problem with the following solution.
"Try a Reset (Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10
seconds or so, until the Apple logo appears, and then release. The
screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.) It is

Apple today announced that pre-orders of its iPhone 5 topped two million in just 24 hours, more than double the previous record of one million held by iPhone 4S. Demand for iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply, and while the majority of pre-orders will be delivered to customers on September 21, many are scheduled to be delivered in October. If you have had an iOS device for very long, you've probably noticed that weather apps have become much more exciting in recent years. The Weather Channel is leading the way with flashy icons and colorful charts that bring its weather data to life. The free iPad app can display animated backgrounds that depict your local weather, as well as full screen, customizable maps. Other features include local pollen information, breaking news video, and push alerts for local, severe weather.

Apple Wins Lawsuit Against Samsung
The Apple win in defense of its iPad and iPhone designs with a jury verdict of patent infringement against Samsung is likely to affect other device makers that run Google’s Android operating system, and their customers, USA Today reported.
The victory for Apple could mean higher prices for the best features, different choices in mobile devices, and devices that work in less familiar ways. Nine jurors found that Samsung violated six out of seven of Apple’s patents at issue.
Three key patents cover familiar touch functions that allow Apple device users to easily scroll pages, zoom out on images or make text larger. If Samsung does not win an appeal on the verdict, it will have to remove and work around those shortcuts.
The $1.05 billion damage award will be one of the largest verdicts in patent history, if it survives.

'Kenny the Clown' Ends Up With Steve Jobs' Stolen iPad

Police looking for a stolen iPad belonging to the late Steve Jobs' found it in the hands of a San Francisco clown. "Kenny the Clown" – also known as Kenneth Kahn – had the iPad, but he says he didn't steal it. In fact, he didn't even know he had it. "In my wildest dreams could I imagine that I would have Steve Jobs' iPad," Kahn told "Good Morning America."
It started when Kenny's friend, Kariem McFarlin, robbed the Jobs' Palo Alto home last month. The home was empty because it was being renovated, and apparently there was no alarm. McFarlin made off with $60,000 of jewelry, Jobs' wallet and his iPad.
The San Jose Mercury News obtained the 36-page police report, and wrote that McFarlin also stole Cristal Champagne, a blender and a soda maker from the home. He also grabbed iPhones, Macs, and iPods before he left.
Prosecutors say the theft appears to be random. McFarlin climbed the scaffolding around the house, found a key and entered through the front door. It wasn't until he saw a piece of mail that he realized where he was, according to the Mercury News.
Investigators arrested McFarlin on Aug. 2 after tracking his IP address when he used the stolen Apple electronics, according to the Mercury News. He is in jail, and bail has been set at $500,000. He could face eight years behind bars.
But before McFarlin could be locked up, he sold many of the stolen goods for cash and gave Kahn an iPad to repay a debt. When Kahn logged into the internet, investigators found him, too. "So the next thing the police were at my door, and I am given them the iPad," Kahn said. "I am not smiling right now."
He says he had no idea the iPad had a famous owner. "There was no phonebook," Kahn said. "I didn't see any information. It was real nondescript. I wish I could say it had a beam to the moon or something, but nah. It was an iPad."
AUG Is Now Part Of The Computer Club
As was announced at last month's AUG meeting, the Apple Users Group is now part of the Oak Run Computer Club. Anyone in Oak Run is still welcome to join us at our monthly (4th Friday) class just like any other class sponsored by the ORHA Web Team. Starting in August, Computer Club members can attend for free while all others will pay $2 per class.
The merger of these two groups was a natural since most Apple users also have PC's and many members were already ORCC members too. Plus, many presentations at the Computer Club are useful to Apple users. As an example, the Sept 19 meeting will have a County Library representative talking about their e-book collection. Then, on Oct 17, a Verizon rep will give a smartphone presentation which will include the iPhone among others.
Remember, all registered AUG members can join the Computer Club for FREE in 2012. All you need to do is see me for an application. You can also download and print an application from the Computer Club blog (left sidebar) or get it directly HERE. Then bring your completed application to the next ORCC meeting. Membership will allow you to participate in the meeting giveaways which include $25 gift cards and Kindle e-readers among other things.

Mountain Lion Now At The Mac App Store
Apple today announced that OS X Mountain Lion, the ninth major release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, is available as a download from the Mac App Store.
Mountain Lion includes with more than 200 innovative new features, such as iCloud integration, the all-new Messages app, Notification Center, system-wide Sharing, Facebook integration, Dictation, AirPlay Mirroring, and Game Center.

Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2012 third quarter ended June 30, 2012.
The Company posted quarterly revenue of $35.0 billion and quarterly net profit of $8.8 billion, or $9.32 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $28.6 billion and net profit of $7.3 billion, or $7.79 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 42.8 percent, compared to 41.7 percent in the year-ago quarter.
“We’re thrilled with record sales of 17 million iPads in the June quarter,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve also just updated the entire MacBook line, will release OS X Mountain Lion tomorrow, and will be launching iOS 6 this Fall. At The July Meeting
For our meeting on Friday, July 27, we will demonstrate the Apple Digital AV Adapter.
With this device you can mirror your iPad2 (or later) and iPhone 4S to your HDTV. Mirroring means that you will see the screen of the device on your widescreen television. This should help us all learn these two devices easier as they are demonstrated in class.
Will You Have Internet On Monday?
When the computer trojan virus, DNSChanger, creators were arrested over 8 months ago the FBI began shutting down domains that may have been affected by the DNSChanger malware.
The virus, which has been circulating the web from as far back as 2007, redirects internet traffic to sites with paid advertisements where cybercriminals can hack into unprotected computers. Authorities say some 275,000 computers are still at risk.
On Monday, the FBI's temporary Internet servers will go dark, leaving thousands of unsuspecting malware-infected individuals without online access.

I would like to let you know of a terrible computer scam experienced by a good friend of mine. I was at her house for four hours, trying to help her out. Please be aware and remember what I am about to tell you.
A few days ago, a friend of mine received a call from a woman with an Indian accent, who claimed to be from Microsoft. She told my friend that her computer had been infected with a Trojan virus, and she was calling from Microsoft to help her get rid of it. My friend asked how she knew her computer had a virus as it wasn’t even turned on at the time and had been unplugged for two weeks prior while she was away. The caller said Microsoft knew by the way she reported those Microsoft errors recently to the company whenever they happened. My friend being a novice on the computer believed her. The woman asked for permission via email that would instruct her to download a little program that would allow her to come into her computer remotely to help clear up the virus, and my friend complied thinking this would be to her advantage. (Wrong Move).
She watched as she saw her desktop being taken over remotely and going into all her programs. My friend became alarmed at this point and told her to get out of her computer immediately, which she did. Then she immediately hung up on the woman , and shut down her computer.
She called me to ask me if she should be worried. I said “Yes, you should be”. Letting this strange woman take over her computer was not the right thing to do and I would be over to see if anything was amiss and hopefully I could help her.
When I looked into her computer, I found that as a result of the incident I could not open her Norton’s anti-virus program, but was able to get onto the Internet. I downloaded a free anti-virus program thinking I could check out her computer, but the computer would not let me run a check. I tried a system restore, and the computer would not let me complete a system restore either.
We decided to call Symantec, Norton’s Anti Virus software parent company, and gave the technician permission to remotely enter the computer to check it out. We watched in awe as the technician checked her computer. He informed us that over 7,000 programs had been installed on her PC and we could see them scrolling right on her desktop as he checked. These programs opened up her computer to anyone that wanted to use it, worldwide, and there was nothing to stop them from getting into her bank accounts and any other accounts she did business with on the NET such as Amazon, Ebay, PayPal, etc.
I asked the technician if it would be wise to do a computer reformat, and the tech said that the virus would not let me reformat the computer even if I tried to.
To cut to the chase it costs her $199 for Norton’s to fix the problem and reinstall her anti-virus software.
I know this was a lot to read, but I thought it was worth warning you that this is a terrible scam going on right now, and after speaking to a few people that I know, some of them told me that they had similar calls, but thankfully didn’t fall into this trap. Just thought I would pass this along to you.
Remember Microsoft would never call and offer help in any way to fix your computer. Especially for free. For that matter no reputable company would do so either.

Microsoft Takes Aim At The iPad
The Surface, which also will have a Pro version, is a thin tablet in a magnesium casing that comes with an integrated kickstand. The device has a thin cover that attaches magnetically and can function as a physical keyboard, something most tablets don't have. When the cover is folded back, the keyboard automatically shuts off so the user can use Surface as a tablet.
"The Surface is a PC. The Surface is a tablet. And the Surface is something new that we think people will absolutely love," Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said at the event, at Milk Studios in Los Angeles. No price was disclosed. Both Surface models will run on the next version of Windows, which is being designed to operate on tablets as well as traditional desktops and laptops.
That next version is being dubbed Windows 8 for devices that run on Intel and AMD 32- and 64-bit processors. A variant, called Windows RT, is the Windows 8 version that will run on devices featuring ARM-based processors such as tablets. Surface for Windows RT is 9.3 millimeters thin and 676 grams (1 pound, 7.8 ounces), with a 10.6-inch high-definition display. Microsoft says it will be available around the time Windows 8 is generally available. No specific date has been set, but expectations are for an October debut.
Surface for Windows 8 Pro will be slightly thicker at 13.5 millimeters and 903 grams (1 pound, 15.9 ounces). It, too, comes with a 10.6-inch display. It also offers a feature called "Pen with Palm Block" in which the screen takes stylus/pen input and does so without the image on the screen moving as the stylus moves. The cover-keyboard is as thin as a sheet of cardboard and sports pressure-sensitive, tactile keys. It locks into place when used as a cover for the device.
The Surface for Windows 8 Pro is expected to ship about three months after Surface for Windows RT, Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live division, said at the event. Sinofsky did not disclose pricing, but said Surface for Windows RT will be comparable to other ARM tablets, and that the Windows 8 Pro version would be priced similarly to premium ultrabooks. Microsoft has had some experience with making hardware, but mainly with peripherals -- mice and keyboards. Its biggest hardware success has been the Xbox gaming console. The company also has had some that were unsuccessful, including the Zune music player.
For PCs that run the company's flagship operating system, Microsoft traditionally has relied on hardware partners such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell or Lenovo, which design and manufacture the desktops and laptops. For Microsoft to come out with hardware for its most significant operating system is a huge break with that tradition. With the Surface emerging as a possible strong competitor, the relationships between those partners and Microsoft could bear watching.
Ballmer, Sinofsky and other Microsoft executives suggested in their presentations, though, that Surface is a continuation of Microsoft hardware's philosophy of producing hardware that highlights the software. Panos Panay, general manager of Microsoft Surface, said the name of Surface comes from idea of the hardware fading into the background so that the software can shine. It's also the name of a table-size device the company developed and markets in which users interact with content on a big, touch-sensitive screen. Microsoft long has dominated the traditional PC market, but it's fallen behind in the new world of mobile. Apple has taken the dominant lead in tablets with its highly popular iPad.
In order for Microsoft to remain relevant as more people shift toward tablets instead of, or in addition to, using desktops and laptops, the company had to create a software system that was designed to work well on tablets. It also needed to have hardware that could best show the morphing nature of Windows 8 -- its ability to work both as a traditional PC and as a tablet -- while also trying to out-design Apple. It may have succeeded. "Looking at the hardware alone, it is breathtaking and I can understand why Microsoft is bankrolling the R&D and not a partner at this point," IDC analyst Al Hilwa said in a statement. "Surface looks like a true converged device."
Expectations had been running high before the event, ever since Microsoft sent out an invitation to media Thursday inviting them to a vague "major Microsoft announcement." In the days since, the company has enjoyed a level of buzz it hasn't garnered for a long time. There was widespread speculation among media, bloggers and tech enthusiasts about what the company was announcing. Speculation had ranged from a major acquisition announcement to a new Xbox-related device. More recently, speculation had coalesced around the idea of a company-branded tablet.
Whatever the fate of the Microsoft Surface in coming days, if it doesn't succeed, it certainly won't be for lack of buzz at its unveiling.

Tap on Collections tab, tap edit tab on the far right, tab the edition you want to move, a little check appears. You can move as many as you want. Just tap it so that the check appears.
Then tap on “move tab”
When the white menu opens, tap the category you want to move your file to, and abracadabra it flies to its new location. Be sure to tap “Done” when it has completed.

I am not a gambler so I just fooled around with it one night when I was bored. I would never gamble on line, but I do like apps. The graphics are great. The cost for unlimited movies streamed instantly to your iPhone, iPad, TV, or computer? All for one low price of $7.99. My husband and I love it. By the way, my husband and I sometimes watch Netflix on two separate devices at the same time. He loves the slasher movies, I love the classics. Just thought I would pass this on. Scanner Pro
Scanners are useful tools, but lets face it: How many of us walk around with a scanner in our bag or backpack? Well, if you have an iPhone or the newer iPad, you can have a scanner with you all the time.
Readdle's Scanner Pro app ($6.99) will never replace the flatbed scanner in your home office, but it will let you use your device's camera to image, process and export or email documents, business cards, photos and more.
Scanner Pro handles multi-page scans, auto-detects document edges and can operate in B&W, grayscale and color modes. It's not as full-featured as a sheet-fed flatbed, but it's a handy and affordable alternative. You can learn more here ....

How to alphabetize Book Marks in Safari
In Safari, press on the book icon (the bookmark button). Select "Edit." Press and hold the area with the three lines (to the right of this symbol: >). Now you can drag any bookmark around within that folder.
You can also use this method to move any bookmark folders around. It's not as easy as having the computer sort for you, but it'll do.

It was good to see quite a few members today even though we lacked access to the Internet this month, I think we accomplished quite a bit with questions and answers.
Some of the things we discussed today were worthy of putting up on the blog as I don't think everyone was able to hear a few of them.
Using a PayPal account to pay for purchases on the Internet
A good source of information which came up at our meeting was the use of PayPal which is about the safest way to pay for purchases on the Internet. More and more vendors are giving you the choice to use PayPal. When using PayPal, you give PayPal the permission to pay the vendor for purchases instead of you giving your credit card information to the vendor. In turn you are liable to pay for the item or items to PayPal who already has the information concerning the credit card you choose to use. The point is, no one else sees your credit card information but PayPal, making it a safer way to purchase anything on the NET.
Adding items to your iPad calendar
Yes, you can add items to your iPad calendar by tapping on a date and then tapping the plus sign in the lower right hand corner. A menu will pop up to enter the information which will then appear on your calendar. You can also add a reminder and choose which reminder suits you best. e.g. 2 days before, on day of event, etc and if it is repeated. Check it out.
If anyone does not see a plus sign in the lower right hand corner, you should get in touch with Apple tech and ask why you don't. It may be that your Calendar app possibly just needs an update to the App.

Richard joined our group to help members out and gave us a web site where we can download free ebooks. However, he said don't expect to find best sellers there due to copyright restrictions, but we could probably find some good classic ebooks.

What is babylon.exe doing on my computer?
Although this subject has nothing to do with Apple, one of the group members asked me if I knew what Babylon was as it was automatically installed on his computer and he assumed it was a virus of some kind. Although I didn't exactly remember what it's function is, I had remembered seeing it somewhere on my own computer. When I got home I googled it and this is what I came up with.
"Babylon.exe belongs to the Babylon Translator software. It provides you with an easy way to get instant translations and information for selected words. Non-system processes like babylon.exe originate from software you installed on your system. Since most applications store data in your system's registry, it is likely that your registry has suffered fragmentation and accumulated invalid entries which can affect your PC's performance."
I am not sure, but I think babylon.exe may be associated with the FireFox browser or FaceBook. As I explained to the member, since our group is concentrating more on Apple products, I couldn't really go into too much, but I hope this information gives him the answer he was looking for.
Local Macintosh User Group
I live in Oak Run, Laurel Oaks, and I am President of the local Ocala Macintosh User Group (OMUG). Our motto is Mac Users helping Mac users. Although we have historically been oriented to computers, we are more and more getting into other Apple products. We have an excellent web page with lots of tips and it is available to the public at no charge. The only parts behind the members only password protected section is a list of members with bios and some discounted items available only to members. It you look at the web page ocalaMug.org you likely will find items of interest to you. One item of special interest is the archive of our MUGSHOT newsletters which cover all things digital including digital photography. I might also mention that our club has a workshop once a month on the third Saturday of every month except June, July, August and December. These are free to members and cost $5.00 for non members. Notes from and schedules for the workshops are on our web page.
One other tip: our members, including me, have found Gator Tec, http://www.gatortec.com/, (an authorized Apple repair shop and reseller) in Gainesville to offer friendly high quality service and to very responsive time wise. Neither I nor the club have any connection to Gator Tec other than being their customer. I think they have workshops every Saturday.

I don't know the real reason why, but I've heard that it's some kind of feud that went on between Steve Jobs & Microsoft, Adobe and Apple. I don't know if that's true or not either.

I hope many of you had a chance to see Gary Anderson and Bob Adams from the Ocala Palms Computer & Technology Club during their iPad demonstration at this morning's ORCC meeting. Bob did a really great job of explaining the differences between the three versions of iPads and how to maneuver around the operating system and applications.

iPad Trick
Hi Apple Users Group Members,
Here's another iPad trick that may come in handy. It works with the iPhone also.
You can take a screen shot of whatever is on your desktop at any given time. It will then automatically be saved to your Camera Roll.
Just press down the Home button and the Sleep button (at back upper right hand corner) at the same time and you will hear a snapping camera sound as if you were taking a picture.
EXAMPLE:
Say you're on a web page and you see a recipe or an article you would want to save to send someone via email, just hold down the two buttons at the same time till you hear the click. You have copied whatever was on your desktop, and viola, it is now in your Camera Roll. You can post it into an email and send it off to someone too, just as you would do with a photo.
Try it...then go to your camera roll and tap on it. It will open full screen as a photo does. You can delete it by tapping the trash can.
I hope this was a useful tip. I've used it often when I come across an article on the Internet & I want to send to a friend.

My only problem has been that when I synced it to my PC I got all the pictures on my phone that were on my computer. I can't figure out how to delete them from my phone (I still want them on my computer). I will look at old posts and also look to see if anyone answers this post regarding this. Thanks, Mary
How to clear your cache or temp files in your iPad
Hello Apple Users Group Members.
Double tap the Home button on your iPad.
You will see a row of Apps situated along the bottom.
These Apps are all the Apps running in the background.
Hold your finger down on any one of the Apps until they all start to wiggle.
A red minus sign will appear in the upper right corner of each App.
Start deleting them one by one by tapping each minus sign.
(Don't worry you are not deleting Apps or files)
And that's all there is to it.

As promised I said I would tell you how to clear your cache or temp files on the iPad which would eventually slow your iPad down if you let it build up.
Double tap the Home button on your iPad.

How to transfer PDF files to your IPad, iPhone & iPod Touch.
Hello again Apple Users Group Members.
Here’s a helpful web site with graphics to show you how.
My own instructions:
Step 1.
Open iTunes
Click file (upper right hand corner of iTunes)
Click “Add file to Library"
When menu opens, locate pdf file on your computer
Click on the pdf file
It will then be imported/saved to your BOOKS directory on iTunes
Step 2.
To sync pdf file to your iPad
Plug iPad into the usb on your computer
When iTunes opens wait until your iPad shows up in the left column.
When it stops loading, click on the iPad icon
Go to the Tool Bar on the top
Which reads: Summary-Info-Apps-Music-TVShows-Books-Photos
Click on the one that says BOOKS
Your PDF File should appear in the directory. Make sure the box next to it is check.
Then click sync (lower right) and it will go to your iBooks Library on the iPad
If you don’t see on the main book shelves in iBooks on your ipad, tap on “collections tab" and then when the menu opens tap on PDFs and it will be there.
Moving your books or other files
If you want to move any book or pdf files to another location in iBooks
Tap on Collections tab, tap edit tab on the far right, tab the edition you want to move, a little check appears. You can move as many as you want. Just tap it so that the check appears.
Then tap on the “move tab” (upper right hand corner)
When the white menu opens, tap the category you want to move
Your file to, and abracadabra it’s flies to its new location. Be sure to tap “Done” when it has completed.

As promised here are a few Apps you can "purchase" for free for the iPad. Most all of the newspapers are free on the iPad. That is, a limited edition of the newspaper itself. If you would want the entire publication it will costs you big bucks. I find these limited Apps of the news paper suit me just fine. However, the choice is up to you. All prices of the editions are listed when you search them to download.
Try downloading the following: (Just bear in mind, when they are free apps, you may have to putt up with the ads here and there) Just remember they are free and they are fabulous. CNN, WNBC, FOX NEWS, WASHINGTON POST, NY TIMES. GOOGLE, TWITTER, SKYPE, READABILITY, (Readability saves items you come across in newspapers and on the internet to read later on), MERRIAM WEBSTER DICTIONARY, FACEBOOK, TIME MAGAZINE MOBILE (not sure if TIME MAGAZINE was for free), C-SPAN RADIO (great), ART LITE, (fabulous art), PHOTO EMAIL (This one is a fun APP. It's brand new by Incredimail. It allows you to make stationary and include snapshots from you photos in a special way and not the run of the mill snapshot in an email, right on your ipad).
Need or just want a free compass? Just search the word COMPASS IN THE APP STORE. Did you get your free jumbo calculator yet? JUMBO CALCULATOR Free in the App Store.Grab it. It's great.
Now for some entertainment Apps: 60 MINUTES (if you missed the show on Sunday. You can watch it all next week on the iPad or the iPhone app.) This is a great APP and I love it. ABC PLAYER APP. Watch a lot of the shows you missed on ABC TV. Shows like THE BACHELOR, BODY OF PROOF, CHEW, THE VIEW, DANCING WITH THE STARS (too many to name here).You can even watch the late night shows.
And remember, if you don't like the app, you can just dump it. Just hold your finger down on the APP until you see an x on the upper left side of the icon, tap the x and it's gone. One more very entertaining and educational is the Google Earth APP. You can take a virtual trip around the world, or right to the city you used to live in, right on your iPad with this APP. Give it a try.
Well, I think you have enough information for now, but there are many, many apps you can explore. Not saying you have to like all or any of them. Be choosy. You have a lot to choose from.
My next hint will be how to clear your cache file on the iPad. Just learned this one myself. After a while this file that holds all your history and temp files builds up, just like your cache and temporary file directory on your computer. I'll tell you have to clean it out.

Give up on the finger!!
I couldn't help noticing that most of you with iPads attending the last users group meeting are still using your fingers to navigate around the touch screen. I've been an iPad and iPhone user for over a year now and fairly early on decided that my podgy (and sometimes sweaty!) fingers were not the ideal interface for these sophisticated machines, especially the iPhone where the alpha numerics are really difficult to pinpoint with any degree of accuracy.
I decided to buy a stylus and it made a huge difference, so my recommendation to all of you that are still struggling with the fingers is to do the same and invest in one. I bought a griffin which seems to be about one of the best and is reasonably priced. Their website is http://store.griffintechnology.com/stylus, & although they advertise them for about $20 you can get better deals through Amazon or Ebay.
It makes typing a whole lot quicker and it is also much easier to select icons and text.

When you find an application you want in the App Store, you can purchase and download it to iPad. If the application is free, you can download it without charge after providing your iTunes account information.

Hello, I am new with the Apple Users Group. I attended the second meeting on Friday Mar 23 and met a lot of nice people. I have been using the iPad now for about 1 year and have learned the basic way around it. I am willing to help anyone if I can. I am not an expert, I just have a little more experience at it. I own an iPad and an iPhone. I really enjoy both. I would have posted earlier, but I am having a lot of trouble with my google account. Hopefully it will work this time.
This is a test post to see if it finally goes through to the blog. If it does, later on or tomorrow I will be listing a few free apps you can download to your iphone or ipad. I will also post the directions on how to download the apps. (very easy).
If you have any immediate questions you would like to ask me please email me at my regular email address as I am not too fond of google right now, sandrab215@aol.com. I will try to answer your questions regarding the Apple iPad or Apple iPhone 4. I must tell you though, that I own the first generation iPad and not the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4. Creating Your Google Account
In order to write a post or comment on one you must first create a Google Account if you don't already have one. Google has recently changed the account creation process. The default causes you to make a Gmail address as your login. You don't have to do it that way if you don't want to. You can use any email that belongs to you IF you use the link at the right in the sidebar item called "Create Your Google Account".

1. Select ‘Settings’ icon on the ipad home screen.
2. Then tap on ‘General’ option on the left column of settings screen.

On this screen you can set relevant date and time on the iPad. You can also make selection for time zone and time format among 24hours or 12hours.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook took the stage Wednesday in San Francisco to demonstrate the new product at an invitation-only event. "In many ways the iPad is reinventing portable computing, and it's outstripping the wildest of predictions," Mr. Cook told the audience.
The new iPad will have a high-resolution "retina" display and connect to 4G LTE services that are offered by carriers like AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless. The tablet will also have a five megapixel camera and a microphone to take dictation.
Apple said the new iPad will start at $499 for Wi-Fi only models—the same starting price as the previous model. Models capable of 4G speeds will start at $629, not including service plans. The new iPad will be available starting on March 16 in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France and Germany.
The newest iPad looks very similar to earlier models but is slightly heavier and thicker than the iPad 2. It weights 1.4 pounds, compared with 1.33 pounds for the predecessor. Apple said the battery will last 10 hours on normal usage, and 9 hours for 4G usage. Read more....HERE.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to let everyone know that I am also available to help with some questions about Apple products. I myself own an iMac and an iPod Touch. I did own an iPhone for about a month but it was with Sprint and the service both here and back in Upstate New York stunk!!!
I have to tell you once you go Mac, you will wonder why you ever did stay with a PC/windows as long as you have. As for the iPad, I am still on the fence. I am not sure that it is worth the money while there are other products on the market like the Amazon Kindle and Kindle Fire.
What are some of your thoughts???

WordPerfect for the Mac?
I was asked about WordPerfect for the Mac and here's what I've found. A word of caution, this may be a bit too technical for some. We can only hope that Corel will finally release a new version of WordPerfect Mac sometime soon.
